On the request of a large Dutch distribution grid operator, the Open Smart Grid Platform has successfully been deployed across two cloud providers in order to prove the scalability of the platform and that a setup with very high availability is possible. Using Docker containers, the platform was deployed in both the Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services cloud platforms with a load balancer in between.

A high volume of messages was offered to the platform, causing the services to scale up automatically. Then, the VPN to one of the cloud providers was manually disconnected. Automatically, all the message traffic were be routed to the cloud provider still available and the services at this cloud provider automatically scaled up further in order to process all of the messages. During this proof of concept, all messages were delivered successfully to the devices and a response was received.
